Creates Commercial Site for Massive, Highly Technical Product Line

Co-OpTek IT Solutions has designed an e-commerce solution for Newport
Scientific, a well-known manufacturer of technical instruments used in
aerospace and defense companies, as well as in the plastics and medical
industries.
Completing the site presented Co-OpTek with significant challenges.
Newport Scientific has an enormous inventory of highly engineered
products designed for precise user specifications in critical
environments such as nuclear facilities. Managing such a large number
of complex devices on a self-service website required taming a
potential labyrinth of inter-related products. The site also had to
accommodate a custom pricing feature. Because of the technical
specificity of the product line, Newport Scientific uses a pricing
system that sends prices back to the consumer after the shopping cart
has been filled. The order is completed when the customer accepts the
pricing and provides a purchase order number.
Using PHP to program the site, Co-OpTek set up the inventory database
using MySQL so that it would run on an Apache server in a Linux
environment. Doing so maintains a high level of user capabilities while
keeping costs down. The custom developed e-commerce site allows Newport
Scientific to easily modify product listings, and even provides the
ability to add images, spec sheets and detailed descriptions. This
increased flexibility of the platform may in time increase business.
For Newport Scientific customers the result is an intuitive,
user-friendly site that creates a seamless and functional purchasing
experience.
In listening to Newport Scientific's individual needs and creating an
e-commerce solution that worked for them, Co-OpTek succeeded where
other design firms had either said it wasn't possible or just plain
failed. "Our prior programmer tried to fit us into a canned
package when our requirements were actually a little more 'outside of
the box,'" says Becky Marin, Vice President of Newport-Scientific.

to do work, no matter what we threw at them. They were wonderful to
